5.0 out of 5 stars Advice Every Puppy Owner Needs To Hear!, July 23, 2010

By Gail Gupton -

This review is from: Puppy Training Sins Every New Puppy Owner Needs To Avoid (Audio CD)

Training a puppy is not totally unlike training a child. To have a good, faithful obedient adult dog requires early and consistent training. Love and affection needs to have balance and structure. Yes, puppies and human babies are cute. But, don't train them... and you'll have definite behavior problems as they get older.

When I rescued my sweet party Cocker Spaniel, Abby, I noticed she was well behaved from the very first day. Someone had loved her enough to have her trained. She was a joy to take places.

I previously had a Cocker Spaniel who never had training and there was a huge difference... between night and day. We got her when she fit in the palm of my hand. She got totally out of control as an adult dog and was spoiled about what she ate and where she slept. She barked incessantly and, when outside, ran away rather than coming when called.

If I get another puppy in the future, training is a MUST. A dog is a beloved family member and should be handled with future behavior in mind. Jim Burwell gives some excellent tips and techniques. Everyone who's considering getting a puppy needs to hear his advice!

I loved listening to this Quick Read Audio Book!

5.0 out of 5 stars How to and How Not To Train/Raise a Puppy (a Dog), August 8, 2010

By Lynn Salter -

This review is from: Puppy Training Sins Every New Puppy Owner Needs To Avoid (Audio CD)

I am not a "dog person" (grew up having only cats) but my husband and son are.

My husband and I listened to Jim's CD with our 13 yo son today who got his first puppy (Stonewall) this past January. There is much room for improvement on our son's part especially in how he interacts with Stonewall. Our son's personality has him at times being very animated and chaotic and doing a number of things that Jim cautions parents about on the CD when children are playing and interacting with their puppy.

There were several times while listening we paused the CD to discuss a point with our son.

For me, I realized the importance of being consistent with Stonewall in the language WE all use with him. Stonewall has an annoying habit of trying to nip at my feet so I plan to use the advice Jim gave addressing a puppy's annoying habits, such as licking you.

We homeschool our son, so I've asked him to write out what he learned today; how he can put the advice into practice to reinforce the lessons WE all learned today!

Thanks, for sharing your expertise in such a concise, timely message. Well worth listening to several more times!

Lynn

5.0 out of 5 stars Puppies Demistified!, August 8, 2010

Listened to this and laughed out loud several times. Lot's of fun, helpful information. The content is based on 'Sins'..a la the 10 commandments. This guy has a good relaxed way of communicating. A few examples he gave actually made me say "Wow!" out loud. Wait untill you hear the story about a dog who pooped in a house for 5 years. After a few sessions the dog stopped...period! Oh, and wait till you hear the real reason why dogs lick humans. Get this. Very good use of money.

I loved to listen to Jim Burwell talking about training puppies. I have a friend that I just know if Jim had gotten hold of her dog when she was a puppy she would be a more..
